Galaxies gone wild

A video from the Hubble website regarding galaxies. Date- 24 April 08. Source- www.spacetelescope.org ‘One of the big mysteries in astronomy is how galaxies grow and evolve over time. Collisions between galaxies are thought to be key events that shape their development. A stunning collection of 59 new images of colliding galaxies has been released to mark the 18th anniversary of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. They give us a unique insight into how galaxies collide to form larger galaxies.’

While it’s considered that the universe is infinite and the grains of sand on Earth are finite, I would say there were more stars than grains of sand. In the observable universe alone there are estimated ~100 billion galaxies, each galaxy containing ~100 billion stars and it’s believed the universe extends beyond the cosmic light horizon, the limit of what we can observe.
