First Battle of Panipat

The first battle of Panipat took place in northern India, and marked the beginning of the Mughal Empire. This was one of the earliest battles involving gunpowder firearms and field artillery. In 1526, the forces of Zahir al-Din Muhammad Babur, the ruler of Kabul and of Timurid descent, defeated the much larger army of Ibrahim Lodhi, the ruler of the large North Indian Delhi Sultanate. The battle was fought on April 21 near the small village of Panipat, in the present day Indian state of Haryana, an area that has been the site of a number of decisive battles for the control of Northern India since the twelfth century.

The battle started at six in the morning. Sultan Ibrahim Lodhi advanced rapidly . At about 400 yards Babur’s Cannons opened fire, noise and smoke from the artillery terrified the Afghans and the attack lost momentum. Seizing the movement Babur sent out his flanking columns to envelop the Sultan’s army. Here the Afghans met for the first time the real weapon of Mongols ‘Turko-Mongol Bow’. Its superiority lay in the fact that it was the weapon of the nobles, of the finest warriors. Such a bow in the hands of a Mongol warrior would shoot three times as rapidly as musket and could kill at 200 yards.

Attacked from 3 sides the Afghans jammed into each other. Elephants hearing noise of cannon at close range ran wildly out of control. Ibrahim Lodhi and about 6000 of his troops were involved in actual fighting. Most of his army stretching behind up to a mile never saw action. Battle ended in about 3 hours with the death of Ibrahim Lodhi who was at forefront.

After capturing Punjab, Babur proceeded towards Delhi to meet Ibrahim Lodhi. The Sultan got the message that Babur was proceeding towards Delhi with a huge army and strong artillery. But Ibrahim Lodhi’s army was much bigger and he had war elephants. But Babur defeated the army with organization and skilled maneuvering. This historic battle of Panipat took place on April 21st (1526) at the place called Panipat which is located in modern day Haryana. This place has been the site many important battles in the history of India.

Second Battle of Panipat (1556 AD)

On 24th January 1556 AD Mughal ruler Humayun slipped while climbing down the steps of his library and fell to his death. His son Akbar was only thirteen years old when he ascended the throne. At the time of Akbar’s accession to the throne, the Mughal rule was confined to Kabul, Kandhahar, and parts of Punjab and Delhi. Akbar was then campaigning in Punjab with his chief minister Bairam Khan. On February 14, 1556, in a garden at Kalanaur, Akbar was enthroned as emperor. Hemu (Hemchandra) was a military chief of the Afghan King Muhammad Adil Shah who had established himself at Chunar and was seeking to expel the Mughals from India. Taking advantage of Humayun’s death, Hemu marched to Agra and Delhi in October and occupied it without difficulty, and became the ruler under the title ‘Raja Vikramaditya’.

Some Support Talat and Some Do Not

Efforts to solve the Cyprus issue are being evaluated in different ways in Turkey. While the Turkish Government supports the Turkish Government supports the Turkish Cypriot President Talat’s efforts, the main opposition party (CHP) has criticized Talat after a long period.

Orders to the ambassadors from Babacan

Turkey’s Minister of foreign Affairs Ali Babacan emphasized that “As part of the UN”S established parameters they (Turkey) will continue to support the efforts to find and extensive solution to the Cyprus issue.”

In his speech during the opening of the Ambassador’s Conference on 15th July at the Bilkent Hotel in Ankara, Babacan touched on the Cyprus issue when he commented that providing the Turkish Cypriots security and supporting its economy while maintaining the balance and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean are the two main strategic targets of Turkey’s Cyprus politics.

”Sacrifices being wasted”

Meanwhile, the main opposition party GHP’s leader, Deniz Baykal, stated that President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot President Demetris Ghristofias have “come to an agreement concerning the future of a united Cyprus’s single sovereignty and single citizenship” and supported that “There can only be one conclusion of such an agreement; this means that Northern Cyprus will be annexed to the Greek Cypriot authority and the Cyprus Turkish citizens will be put under the Greek authority and reduced to a minority status.”

His evaluation of the latest developments in Cyprus was made during his party’s group meeting in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, when he also said: “Single sovereignty, whose sovereignty? Whose sovereignty in single government, North Cyprus’ sovereignty? What will happen to the TRNC, and Turkish Cypriot citizens when sovereignty and citizenship reduces to one? If this happens all the soldiers will leave and the Guarantor Agreement will not be valid.”

”Single sovereignty, whose sovereignty?”

The party leader continued to say: “This situation will end all the advantages gained from the self-sacrifices of the Turkish nation made since 1974 in one go, and Turkey’s important, strategic main supply road will be surrounded.”

Baykal stated that Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs do not say a word concerning this issue and that this is very sad, because this agreement is 100 percent contradictory to the Cyprus Politics’ basis revealed in the Nationals Security Council on April 24th, 2008. There were no statements from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs on this issue he said.

Thanks to the United Nations Annan Plan, in April 2004, the European Union has made pledges toward lessening the economic isolation of northern Cyprus, which is of course entirely dependent on Turkey for financial, as well as other forms of aid. This pledge included both aid and trade, with 259 million euros in aid being offered.

”The tensions and political discussions can be solved. However our privileges in international relations which will be lost can not be returned. I invite everyone to be sensitive in this matter,” said CHP’s Chairman Baykal who supported that the period’s most important historical developments took place in Cyprus but that the media and the public authorities do not show an interest in this at all.

Grand National Runner Selection

Though the Aintree Grand National only takes place once a year, the run-up to it and the selection of horses that ultimately race in it, takes place over a four-month period.

The John Smith’s Aintree Grand National, which takes place this year at 4.15pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 4, 2009, is a class 1, Grade 3 race, which this year has a prize fund pot worth £900,000.

There are a number of criteria, which must be met, by trainers and owners before a horse can be considered for eligibility. Horses must be at least six-year-old or older and must be allotted a rating of 110 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping.

This ranking comes after a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 8, 2009. A horse entered in January that subsequently does not obtain a ranking high enough for qualification will be scratched from the entrants list on the first forfeit date, which, in the case of this year, was February 24th, 2009.

It should also be noted that horses, which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at January 27, 2009, may also be entered. Horses in this position may be eligible for a weight providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse’s racecourse performances to February 8, 2009, would merit a minimum rating of 110.

There are also other stipulations that trainers and owners of these horses need to consider when entering a potential Grand National runner. Their horse must have run at least three times in Steeple Chases run under the Rules of Racing of the same Recognised Turf Authority up to and including February 8, 2009. At the Handicapper’s discretion such horses may be allocated a rating.

From this point, the decision of the BHA Head of Handicapping is final. Entries closed January 27 and on were revealed on January 28. There were 123 entrants in total, of which 35 were Irish-trained, six of whom are renewals from last year.

Shortly after the announcement was made, three horses, Denman, Joe Lively and Leading Attraction were scratched by their trainers, leaving 120 horses in contention for the 40 places up for grabs.

The next stage of the process is the declaration of the weights, which took place on February 10th; the highest weight issued to a horse was Exotic Dancer at 11st 10lb. Simply put, it means that based on his past performances, he is seen as the biggest potential threat on the day and to even out the playing field, other horses are given less weight to carry, thereby increasing their chances of winning.

The first forfeit stage took place on February 24, where a further 14 horses were scratched from the list, 17 including the previous three horses who were withdrawn earlier in the process. That now leaves 106 horses in the running.

With Cheltenham taking place on March 10th ? 14th, it gives trainers and owners another opportunity to assess their horse’s chances in the Grand National. So following this major event in the horse-racing calendar a second forfeit stage will take place on March 17th. Horses withdrawn at this point will be announced on March 18th.

It is not anticipated that the final runners list will be complete so a further forfeit stage will take place on March 30th, just four days before the big race. With the possibility that there will still be too many horses remaining for the 40 available spots, the final declaration stage will take place at 10.00am, April 2.

At this point the form figures supplied will be completely up to date and the race card will be complete. And that is how the 40 horses that race in the John Smith’s Aintree Grand National 2009 will be chosen.

Ike And Tina Then Bobby And Whitney And Now Chris And Rihanna

According to the Centers for Disease Control, domestic violence is a serious, preventable public health problem affecting more than 32 million Americans, or more than 10% of the U.S. population and only a third of cases are actually reported. Since celebrities are also humans – although some fans and stars believe that they are gods and goddesses – some of them are amongst the 32 millions victims.

Ike and Tina Turner were one of the greatest duos of the 60s and 70s; and since they were a “married”, they must have looked the perfect fairy tale couple. But things weren’t as they seemed. They were rumors of Ike abusing Tina and that he had a drug problem. Tina finally left Ike in 1976 after 16 years of marriage. In 1986, she wrote a biography title I, Tina which she talked about her life, Ike’s abuse towards her and his drug addiction. The book was adapted into a movie What’s Love Got To Do With It? which was released in 1993, the same year Ike was released from prison after serving four years on drug and weapon charges. Ike denied the abuse allegations. saying that he only hit Tina a few times and that Tina often hit back. – So it was kick boxing and Ike always won. – In 2001, Ike published his autobiography Takin’ Back My Name in which he admitted that he “slapped Tina…there have been times I have punched her for no reason” Because of the huge negative image the book and the movie gave him, Ike had troubles rekindling his career; but he managed to win a Grammy in 2007. He passed away that same year, from a cocaine overdose. – Proof that drug really can kill.

Unlike Ike and Tina Turner, Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston were married for sure, didn’t perform together, were both successful solo singers, and were both addicted to drugs. In other words, they’ll get high together. – I know, how romantic! – On January 11th 2000, security at the Hawaiian airport found marijuana in their luggage. They were a lot of rumors of Bobby beating Whitney. In 2003, Bobby was arrested for hitting Whitney, but, as usual, she took him back. Whitney went to rehab in 2006 and on April 24th 2007, she divorced Bobby after 14 years of marriage and got the custody of their daughter Bobbi Kristina Houston-Brown. Now something which I find kind of funny: Whitney was offered the role of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It? but had to decline due to maternity. I wonder if playing Tina would have been an earlier wake up call. Everyone knows that Bobby always had a drug problem while Whitney always had a clean good girl image thru out her career. That makes it easy to assume that Bobby was the one who introduced her to drugs. In 2008, Bobby wrote an autobiography titled “Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But” which was scheduled to hit the shelf on May 2008. In the book, he says that he was only into cocaine and Whitney was the one who introduced him to other drugs. He didn’t confirmed whether or not she was bisexual and admitted that he wasn’t faithful to her. He also said: “Whitney and I had our arguments and fights just like everyone else. It was no Ike and Tina type of fights, but that’s what the media made the public believe.” In April, Whitney made him sign a confidentiality agreement in which he promised not to write anything about her. “Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth” was still published on December 2008 by Derek Handspike as an “unauthorized” biography of Bobby Brown. Maybe it will be adapted to a movie and become as successful as What’s Love Got To Do With It?

The latest one is totally different. It’s the twenty first century, they are both young, have clean images, weren’t married and reportedly never used drugs. On February 08th, Chris Brown was accused of beating and threatening a woman who was later identified as being his girlfriend Rihanna. – Everybody already suspected that. – Rihanna was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center hospital where it was reported that she beard visible bruises and that her face was bleeding. Chris gave himself up to the police later that day; he was released from jail after paying a $50,000 bail. There are reports that the couple where spotted arguing. The reason is still unknown but many say that Rihanna got angry after reading a message from a woman to Chris. According to People, they got back together and after spending some time at Diddy’s Miami Beach’s Star Island. And that’s not all! They will record a love duet together. Unbelievable. – I think that’s called Love, or is it Stupidity, maybe Blindness. Yet again, what’s the difference. – Whitney Houston and Oprah Winfrey advised her not to take him back. Tina Turner is rumored to be planning to meet her to try and change her mind. Since books and autobiography seem to be the best way to get back at abusing spouses and that the pen is mightier than the fist, we should be on the look out for autobiographies where they will be trashing each other, in the years to come.
